Critical Reflexivity in Pain Care: Adding “Criticality” to Reflective Practices

Reflection is an integral and common component of healthcare professionals work to think and improve on how we do what we do. Critical reflexivity is a different and complementary form of reflective practice. Critical reflexivity is interested in questioning how healthcare professionals’ backgrounds, dominant forms of knowledge, colleague’s and workplace values, societal norms and discourses influence our practice and relation to others. It questions: what are the power relations present in this encounter? Ultimately, it helps us address our own biases and assumptions about the world and others, while considering their impact on our social relations to foster more equitable and compassionate healthcare practices. This talk will provide a brief overview of what critical reflexivity is, and what it does in the context of healthcare practices. It will explore the evidence from medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and education to discuss the benefits and challenges of fostering critically reflexive professionals. Attendees should leave this talk feeling better equipped to challenge their assumptions and biases and provide more compassionate and equitable healthcare practices.
