Associate Professor Christopher A. Kenedi​

Internal Medicine Physician and Liaison Neuropsychiatrist, Body Mind Medicine, Auckland, NZ
Chris trained at Duke University Medical Center in internal medicine and psychiatry. His family came to New Zealand for 3 years (15 years ago). He retains a faculty position there in both Departments of Medicine and Psychiatry. He is the only dual-trained physician-psychiatrist in New Zealand.
 
He performs complex case reviews for the NZ Coroners and Judicial system, doctors before the MCNZ, and for the Medical Assurance Society and ACC. He is a neuropsychiatric consultant for the United Nations Working Group on Aviation Mental Health, and spent his sabbatical with the US Federal Aviation Authority. During the sabbatical he also trained in Hostage/Crisis Negotiation with the US FBI Academy (as a negotiator and not as a hostage).

His academic career has spanned from the depths of the oceans to the atmosphere as he has published more than 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine and the Journal of Aerospace Medicine. He has given more than 50 grand rounds, peer-reviewed and invited talks internationally.

Somatic Pain Syndromes and Functional Neurological Disorders, What Connects Them?

This will review the modern understanding of autonomic nervous system dysregulation, inflammatory responses and the basis of our modern understanding of non-nociceptive somatic/functional pain disorders which are very real and treatable causes of physiologic changes causing distress and pain symptoms for patients.

Communication Skills for Those in Distress

​Based on the US FBI Hostage/Crisis Negotiation skills training program, this talk will review some of the elements that are critical for engaging with patients who are upset, distressed and otherwise challenging for clinicians.
